Teenager Jo couldn’t quite believe her luck when she was picked as this week’s Cash Dash shopper.

Jo Bailes and her mum, Chris Irving, were in a hurry when we stopped them in the Hillstre DC shoes et shopping centre and offered them pounds 100.

“I have so much to do but how could I deny her?” says Chris of her 13-year-old daughter.

Generously, the Norton mum passed the entire sum to Jo who couldn’t quite believe her luck.

Just occasionally I get to meet up with other women’s writers at a lunchtime “do”, which in the best traditions of journalism is paid for by someone else.

I was all ears as she elaborated. As with most of life’s rites of passages, it pays to be prepared.

Firstborn is sitting his GCSEs in the summer and has yet to make up his mind what A-levels he wants to take and what he wants to do with them.

His first thoughts were that he could go into architecture. This was largely based on the fact that he was a whizz at anything to do with Lego when he was younger and has a strong urge to design Japanese minimalist houses – he loves anything oriental. But he’s finding GCSE art a bit of a time-consuming struggle and starting to realise that not everyone wants to live in a white cube with no furniture and a bed that pulls out 59fifty  from the wall.

Of course he’s toyed with the idea of being a vet like his dad and uncle – all vets’ children probably grow up with a hankering after the profession.

But the new bee in his bonnet is a career in accountancy. His reasoning is sound. He’s good at maths, a stickler for the rules and wants to make lots of money.

Well, you don’t meet many poor accountants. British members of the profession are among the best paid in the entire world.

The Man-in-Charge has been pretty scathing about this desire for filthy lucre. But, as my lunchtime companion pointed out, there will be little we can do about it if that’s the way it goes. In fact, opposition will be guaranteed to turn him towards the dark side.

Which brings me round to the subject of empty nests. My friend has found herself strangely bereft since her daughter left home and says it’s not something that people talk about much.

So we put matters to right and gave the subject a thorough airing. One person said not to worry because quite often the fledglings come back and bring others with them – she has a son AND hermes handbags his girlfriend now living with her.

But I felt strangly bereft too. Already. I’m going to be one of those horrible clingy mums who packs little treats into their rucksacks and tells them to bring their washing home whenever they like.

LAST Monday night, I didn’t really want to go out. I had spent the afternoon lounging on my friend’s sofa in jogging bottoms and a Tshirt and happily would have stayed there for the evening.

But I had promised to go to a party in town so, with not enough time to go home and get changed, my friend helped me throw an outfit together.

She lent me a lovely little black dress but, not wanting to look too smart, I slung my T-shirt back on top and threw on a pair of new red shoes that happened to be in the boot of my car, still in their box.

So, as I walked down Carnaby Street towards the waiting paparazzi, I knew I wasn’t exactly ‘red-carpet ready’. The dress had a great big flower on the front which, under my T-shirt, looked like a third boob and, come to think of it, the shoes probably still had price stickers on their soles. The very last thing on my mind was the dress which — as the world now knows — had ridden up so high that my big, white granny knickers were on display.

I didn’t know it at the time, but this was my real-life Bridget Jones moment — a mortifying memory that I can only hope will fade in time.

But right now, with my cheeks still flushed with embarrassment, it is some consolation to know that almost every woman has had one.

While we are expected to keep up with fashion — to go without a coat in the wind and rain; to wear skirts that are impractically long or short, tops with plunging necklines, and 6in heels instead of flats — men just put on a pair of trousers and a shirt.

Is it any wonder that we women are so often caught out looking silly? On Monday night, I was aware that my friend’s black dress was shorter than I am used to wearing.

And on my way to the party, I did slip into a shoe shop (where the photographers couldn’t see me) to pull it down a bit. But I was blissfully unaware, until the next day, that I had revealed quite so much.

In fact, it makes me laugh to think that as I drove home that night in my makeshift outfit, I thought to myself: ‘Not bad for an outfit I just threw together! I think I got away with it!’

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

SIMON Mardon’s road to victory in Saturday’s Shoe Clinic 10- kilometre road race was not without admiration for the second-place finisher.

“I’ve never seen anyone run so smoothly,” Mardon said of five- time New Zealand champion and former Nelson College runner Dominic Channon. “He makes it look so easy.”

Channon, who is DC shoes in his second year at Providence College in the United States, returned to Nelson for the Christmas holidays.

His training programme called for an 8km tempo run that was followed by an easy 2km jog warmdown. He chose to do it in conjunction with the Shoe Clinic 10K.

“It was the best option,” Channon said. “I could have done it along the Maitai [Valley Rd], but there is a lot of traffic there at the moment and it is not real safe.”

At the Shoe Clinic 10K he had a flat, fast course that started at the Monaco Domain and wound through the Stoke neighbourhoods and the railway reserve, where Channon trained so often as an Athletics Nelson junior.

He also had orange-vested course marshals, who stopped traffic on the busy through-roads.

But he  59fifty  had no-one to run with. Channon clipped off kilometres at a pace of 3min 12sec per kilometre and breezed through the 5km in 16min 2sec, 55 seconds ahead of Mardon.

Channon then picked up the pace and finished his 8km tempo run in 25min 45sec.

Mardon passed Channon at 9km, about a kilometre into Channon’s warmdown jog, and crossed the finish line in a fine effort of 33min 51sec. No-one else passed Channon, who finished fully refreshed in 35min 15sec. Brian Kemp was third in 35min 33sec.

“Dominic told me what he was doing at the starting line, and it was great to have him in the race,” Mardon said.

“He is at the top of his game, and I look forward to seeing him in the Olympics some day.”

Jodie Fa’avae won the women’s race in 41min 16sec. Carol Cooper was second in 43min 44sec, followed by Pam Morris in 43min 53sec.

Gary Holz won the men’s walk in 58min 1sec. Peter Hague was second in 58min 59sec, followed by Bevan Cook in 62min 52sec.

Ros D’Agnilli won the women’s walk in 66min 6sec. Yvonne Shaw was second in 70min even, and Barb Gibbs was third in 70min 2sec.
